Gorki Águila, known as the leader of “Porno para Ricardo” it’s also a gifted graphic artist, who not only challenges the Cuban regime through music but has now ventured into a unique style of dissent through his poster designs.
His graphic works show a bold aesthetic that mirrors the defiant tone of his music. Drawing inspiration from traditional political posters of the 70s, he employs provocative imagery and satirical elements, channeling a keen sense of humor to confront the oppressive Cuban regime. This aesthetic of dissent serves as a visual protest, expressing resistance in a language that, coupled with references to traditional political posters, creates an extraordinary narrative that deserves preservation.
One of the most striking aspects of Gorki’s graphic works is his ability to turn the dictatorship’s propaganda machine against his oppressors. By utilizing the same graphic language employed by the regime, he subverts its intended messages. This subversion is a masterful act of resistance, as Gorki repurposes the visual elements of propaganda to convey messages of dissent and defiance. Aguila deliberately refrains from producing commercial graphic works, making his pieces rare and highly valuable.
